How to build a custom Google Chrome theme with ease

Last year, Google released a set of themes for Chrome, allowing users to choose among a selection of Googly sounding colours for their browser. With the newest versions of Chrome, the firm actually lets you roll your own Chrome themes so you no longer even need to go to the store. Here’s how this works.

How to build your own custom Chrome theme

  • Open the Chrome browser and go to the New Tab Page
  • Click the pen looking icon at the bottom to open the new ‘customize’ page
  • When that opens, select ‘Colour and Theme’
  • You’ll be able to choose your own colours for the browser from Google’s offerings, as you can see I’ve chosen a nice and lovely shade of red.
  • If you aren’t satisfied with those, you can also select your own custom colours — though the UI here does leave a lot to be desired.
  • You also have the option of choosing a background photo, either from one of Google’s standard library or from your own locally saved images.

With Google’s new customization option, building out Chrome to be a browser that looks exactly how you want it is easier than ever. Microsoft’s new Edge browser doesn’t yet have the same feature, but with Firefox and Chrome both offering advanced customization, the ball’s in Redmond’s court.

Success! You're on the list.
